International Walk to School Day 2017

Students walking to Markham Elementary with parents and school staff on International Walk to School Day 2016.

The Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Program in Solano County is excited to announce International Walk to School Day on:

Wednesday, October 4, 2017!

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

*Take these 3 STEPS to host a Walk to School Day event at your school!

Step 1: Register your school on our website here. All registered schools will receive incentive items from the Safe Routes to School program to distribute to participating students on the day. We aim to have materials delivered one week prior to the event date while supplies last so please register by WednesdaySeptember 27th to allow time for delivery.

Step 2: Identify a lead volunteer for your school and coordinate a team of approximately 4-6 additional volunteers for the morning of October 4th. The team should arrive approximately 30 minutes before student arrival to position volunteers at the major entrances of the school to observe students as they walk to school.

Step 3: Promote the event and distribute the poster throughout the school. Be a champion in getting your school and community involved! This is also great information to post on your school’s marquee, if available. If you would like additional copies, you can download posters above or please call (707) 399-3222.
